Frequently asked questions

What should a personal training agreement include?
It should identify the trainer and client, describe the training services, state the session package and expiry period, set payment terms, explain scheduling and cancellation rules, and include health disclosure, assumption of risk, liability waiver, confidentiality, termination, and dispute resolution provisions.
Can a personal trainer charge for a late cancellation?
Yes, if the contract clearly states the cancellation notice required and the consequence for late cancellations, such as forfeiting the session or paying a fee. The policy should be reasonable, consistently applied, and compliant with applicable consumer protection laws.
Is a liability waiver enough to protect a personal trainer?
A waiver can help manage risk, but it may not protect against all claims, especially claims involving negligence, gross negligence, willful misconduct, or rights that cannot legally be waived. Trainers should also maintain appropriate insurance, follow professional standards, and document client health disclosures.
Should clients disclose medical conditions before training?
Yes. The agreement should require clients to disclose relevant health conditions, injuries, medications, or limitations and to seek medical clearance when appropriate. This helps the trainer adapt sessions and reduces the risk of injury.
